Julie's Bicycle

In 2012, Arts Council England became the first arts funding body in the world to embed environmental sustainability into the funding agreements of its major programmes, and partnered with Julie’s Bicycle, the leading global charity bridging the gap between environmental sustainability and the creative industries to help push for change at all levels.

Julie’s Bicycle approached Intermesh to prepare the Sustaining Great Art: 2012-2015 report for publication by Arts Council England, presenting the results of environmental reporting and showing how the arts and culture sector is increasingly choosing to take positive action. Having worked with Julie’s Bicycle previously on a number of projects – including the Sustaining Great Art Interim Report, and The Arts and Environmental Sustainability – An International Overview commissioned by the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies – we were delighted to be involved.

The aim of the annual report and summary infographic was used to provide insight (both qualitatively and quantitatively) and to detail the progress made within the past 12 month for all companies involved in the sustainability initiative. On a broader scale, the annual report was used as a platform to celebrate and give recognition to the progress made as a whole within the creative industries.

Working closely with the team at Julie’s Bicycle, we created concept designs for both the report and infographic, building on the visual themes of the previous 2 years’ reports and meeting both Julie’s Bicycle’s and Arts Council England’s brand requirements.

In addition to case studies, data and statistics were a key part of reporting the impact of Julie’s Bicycle’s work, and it was essential that we presented this information accessibly. We represented the data prepared by the team at Julie’s Bicycle in an infographic, telling a story of increased engagement and tangible benefits to the sector with a visual representation of the facts and figures.
